A letter from camp about the coronavirus

Directors & Staff

Bill and Sabina have been directing Moosilauke for close to 30 years. When they are not at Moosilauke, they live and work at The Thacher School in Ojai, CA. Bill is the Director of Enrollment and Planning, and Sabina is the Assistant Head and Dean of Students. They both attended Colgate University and received graduate degrees from Columbia. (Bill earned his M.B.A. and Sabina her Master’s in Education.) The Boston Globe, in a feature article, wrote that Bill and Sabina have “earned unofficial doctorates in boyhood.” (Click here to read the article.) A parent recently wrote that “Bill and Sabina McMahon’s gifts for understanding boys are on display in everything from the well-trained staff to the activities to the food. They put their heart and soul into Moosilauke and we are the beneficiaries. Whatever success my son has in life, it will be in part because of the values, camaraderie and pure joy Camp Moosilauke gave him.” Click here for more parent testimonials.

Our staff members are carefully selected. We have a very low turnover and most new counselors are either ex-campers or are recommended by former counselors and parents. Although many counselors are in college, key administrative positions are filled by professional educators, some of whom have been associated with Moosilauke as campers and counselors for more than 20 years. Ken Miller, Sabina’s brother, is the Associate Director. During the off-season, Ken lives in Colorado. He graduated from Colgate, has his Master’s of Arts in Teaching, and teaches and coaches at a private school in Denver. Sabina and Ken’s sister, Ingrid Hale, helps manage the business end of things, along with the office and all of our social media postings (pictures, videos, etc.). She lives in Richmond, VA. Ingrid also graduated from Colgate and is currently working in Admissions and earning her Master’s in Nonprofit Studies at the University of Richmond. Todd Gelfand serves as our all-around administrative troubleshooter. Todd was a camper for eight years and then a counselor in the 1970s. When not at Moosilauke, he lives in Los Angeles and is the Managing Partner of a C.P.A. firm.

Gordon “Port” Miller, the Owner, grew up at Moosilauke and took over for his father over forty years ago. He attended Horace Mann School, Colgate University, and received his doctorate from Columbia.  He has written a number of books in the field of decision making, including Teaching Your Child to Make Decisions and The Little Book for Big Decisions. Port’s wife, Heide, oversees the business operations of the Camp.

A third generation of Millers and McMahons is also helping to run Moose. Preston Miller, Jake Miller, Quinn McMahon, and Charlotte McMahon are all head counselors. Preston, Ken’s oldest, graduated with a Master’s from Colorado State University, teaches history, and coaches track and cross country at the Highland School in Virginia. Ken’s younger son, Jake, also a graduate of Colorado State University, teaches science, oversees the farm education program, and serves as head house parent at St. Andrew’s School-Sewanee in Tennessee. Quinn, Bill and Sabina’s oldest, graduated from Colgate and is an Associate Director of Admissions and lacrosse coach at the Pomfret School in Connecticut. Charlotte, Quinn’s wife, earned her Master’s of Arts in Teaching degree at Colgate. She teaches English, is an Assistant Dean of Students, serves as a dorm head, and coaches field hockey at the Pomfret School.
