Directors & Staff

Bill and Sabina have been directing Moosilauke for close to 30 years. When they are not at Moosilauke, they live and work at The Thacher School in Ojai, CA. Bill is the Director of Enrollment and Planning, and Sabina is the Dean of Students. They both attended Colgate University and received graduate degrees from Columbia. (Bill earned his M.B.A. and Sabina her Masters in Education.) The Boston Globe, in a feature article, wrote that Bill and Sabina have “earned unofficial doctorates in boyhood.” (Click here to read the article.) A parent recently wrote that “Bill and Sabina McMahon’s gifts for understanding boys are on display in everything from the well-trained staff to the activities to the food. They put their heart and soul into Moosilauke and we are the beneficiaries. Our staff members are carefully selected. We have a very low turnover and most new counselors are either ex-campers or are recommended by former counselors and parents. Although many counselors are in college, key administrative positions are filled by professional educators, some of whom have been associated with Moosilauke as campers and counselors for more than 20 years. Ken Miller, Sabina’s brother, is the Associate Director. During the off-season, Ken lives with his wife and two sons in Colorado.  He has a masters degree in teaching and is a teacher at a private school in Denver. Sabina’s sister Ingrid Hale, who has 20 years of experience in higher education administration, helps manage the business end of things, along with the office and all our social media postings (pictures, videos, etc.).

Gordon “Port” Miller, the Owner, grew up at Moosilauke and took over for his father over forty years ago. He attended Horace Mann School, Colgate University, and received his doctorate from Columbia.  He has written a number of books in the field of decision making, including Teaching Your Child to Make Decisions and The Little Book for Big Decisions. Port’s wife, Heide, is the Camp Business Manager.

And a third generation of McMahon/Millers/Hales is also helping to run Moose. Quinn, Bill and Sabina’s oldest, graduated from Colgate and is an Assistant Director of Admissions and lacrosse coach at the Pomfret School in Connecticut. He serves as one of the head counselors. Preston, Kenny’s oldest, graduated with a Master’s from Colorado State University and is currently a high school teacher and coach at the Highland School in Connecticut. He also serves as a head counselor. Kenny’s younger son, Jake, also a graduate of Colorado State University, currently teaches science and coaches at St. Andrew’s School-Sewanee in Tennessee. He serves as well as a head counselor and directs the Waterfront.
